There were only 480 people named on the census in Greenpoint at the time. There was a huge immigrant community with the Irish and the Germans as the largest groups, but there were also many Englishmen, Scots and Canadians. There are also two Poles, which debunks the idea that Poles are recent Greenpoint arrivals.
Most people worked in shipbuilding, but alot of people also worked for Charles Cartiledge who started a pottery on West Street. There were 470 Dwellings hotels etc 3 stores 16 grocery 16 and 623 families.
Daniel MILTON, whom Milton Street was named for, was just 33 years old from New Hampshire and he worked as a capstan & windlass maker. Honestly I had no idea what this meant, but wikipedia told me,” A capstan is a vertical-axled rotating machine developed for use on sailing ships to apply force to ropes, cables, and hawsers. The principle is similar to that of the windlass, which has a horizontal axle.
Almost the whole village was centered around Franklin Street. The eastern end of the village was McGuinness Blvd, which was called Oakland Street.
